PRC Buys a Lightweight Single for the club!

The PRC Board voted to bid on a lightweight King single that the Cambridge Boat Club was selling, and we now own this boat.

After much discussion, the board felt that another PRC Club boat would be a worthy investment for the club and its membership. Graeme was able to place a bid at the board's direction and the bid was accepted. The price for the boat was very modest. The boat will be arriving in the near future, and an announcement will be made when it is ready to row by qualified PRC members.

I want to advise the club members that there was much discussion regarding this purchase. At the 2011 Annual Meeting, the membership agreed to a spending moratorium on new equipment, at the request of the Land Securement Committee. However, it was felt by the board that this was a really positive investment and a good addition to the PRC fleet. The board felt that if we needed to liquidate the amount of cash it took to buy this new boat, the club could sell some under-used PRC equipment, or this boat itself. I just want to assure the membership that the board took into consideration the memberships request on limiting new equipment purchases in 2011 into consideration.

If you have any questions or comments about this purchase, please don't hesitate to email me or any of the PRC Board members.

Thanks,
Patty

PRC Big Boat Rows start Sunday, July 3rd at 7:30 a.m.

Big Boat Rows will be starting up this Sunday, July 3, at 7:30 am.

Elizabeth Macalaster will lead the first one. She'll give us tips on getting the boats in and out of the boathouse safely and rowing together efficiently. She'll also do skills and drills with us  in the big boats, that can also be used in singles. This is a good opportunity to learn from each other and have fun while we're at it.

There will be a sign up sheet each week in the big boat house. We are asking people to sign up this year so that the person in charge of the BBR doesn't rush down to the docks on Sunday morning and have nobody else show up. If you can't make it down to sign up, call or email the person in charge that week.

There will be a different person in charge each week. Here is the schedule so far.
It is also be posted on the PRC website calendar.

7/3 Elizabeth M.
7/10 Basha
7/17 Laura
7/24 Basha
7/31 Meredith
8/7 Carolyn

We are looking for more people to lead BBRs in August. If anyone is interested please talk to Sally or Laura. We also might want to use some of those August Sundays to do some longer rows.
Hope to see you down there on Sunday.

June 2nd

Spring rowing can be a mixed bag and this year has been especially so.  The river is finally settling down after continued rains and flooding to the north.  This morning, while out rowing, I had the pleasure of spotting a moose in the river on the Vermont side.  After some difficulty getting out of the water it swam across the river, 20 yards downstream of my boat, and hopped out on the New Hampshire side.  A real treat for getting out on the river before 6 a.m.

On Wednesday morning The Putney School Rowers finished their season with an early row.  Most of their time on the water was spent doing laps between the boathouse and the start of the Green Mountain Head, staying clear of the swifter waters.  The Putney School team will pick up again in early September with the new school year and we look forward to calmer waters and more training time.

Be sure to come on down to the boathouse on Saturday from 8:30 - 10 when our club will host a National Learn to Row day event.  Folks are invited to come tour the boathouse and, perhaps, try hopping in a boat.

As always, continue to practice caution when heading out.  Consider rowing with a partner or in a double.  The debris seems to be subsiding, but the current is still quite swift and their are some challenging eddies, especially right as you cross the river from the docks.
